Lufthansa launches first scheduled flights using Biofuel
Lufthansa has launched a six-month biofuel trial on regular scheduled flights. A Lufthansa Airbus A321 with the registration D-AIDG flies the Hamburg-Frankfurt-Hamburg route four times daily. One of its engines runs on a 50/50 mix of regular fuel and biosynthetic kerosene. The biofuel for jet engines has been approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
Since biokerosene has similar properties to those of conventional kerosene it can be used for all aircraft types without any need for modifications to the aircraft or its engines. The first flight of the six-month trial, operating under flight number LH013, took off on 15 July from Hamburg at 11.15am bound for Frankfurt. During the six months test run period, the use of biofuel will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,500 tonnes.
Christoph Franz, chairman and CEO of the Lufthansa Group, said: “Lufthansa is the first airline worldwide to use biofuel in scheduled daily flight operations. We are thus continuing to steadily implement our proven and successful strategy for sustainability.”
The biosynthetic kerosene used by Lufthansa is derived from pure biomass (biomass to liquids – BtL) and consists of jatropha, camelina and animal fats. In the procurement of biofuel, Lufthansa ensures that it originates from a sustainable supply and production process. Suppliers must provide proof of the sustainability of their processes and meet the criteria stipulated by the European Parliament and the Council in the Renewable Energy Directive.
Lufthansa guarantees that the production of its biofuel is not in direct competition with food production and that no rainforests are destroyed.

Mangalore students are making a nano satellite
Parikshit, the group from Manipal Institute of Technology, is aiming to complete the project within two years
A team of students from Manipal University are on a mission to make a nanosatellite, which is to be launched within the next two years. They are being guided by experts working in ISRO and and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. The team is named ‘Parikshit’.
Kanika Garg, 4th year aeronautical engineering student of Manipal Institute Of Technology (MIT) and the project manager, said, “Parikshit is derived from the Sanskrit name ‘Parikshan’, which means ‘test’.”
A typical nanosatellite would weigh anywhere between one and 10 kg. “Nanosatellites are not only small, but also affordable.
They can piggyback on larger launch vehicles, avoiding the need for a dedicated launch. From a military perspective, their small size allows them to avoid detection,” Garg said.
For the sake of efficient distribution of time and resources, the work to be done by Parikshit has been divided into five phases. From July 2010 to October 2010, officials of Manipal University carried out a feasibility study. Interested students were invited to an orientation programme before the team was selected through a three-stage screening process.
Students were divided into various sub-systems based on their area of expertise. The sub-systems comprise Payload, Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), Electrical Power Systems, Structure Thermal and Mechanisms, On-board Data Handling System, Computers, Communication and Ground Station sub-system. Each sub-system has a head who is also a member of the core technical team.
Parikshit also comprises a management and a web designing team.
The first step in the process of building the satellite began in November 2010. The overall objectives were identified and a preliminary research was carried out on the basic methodology of nanosatellites. The work was reviewed by Dr D V A Raghava Murthy, director of small satellites, ISRO. Among those guiding the team was Padmashree Dr B N Suresh, former director, VSSC.
The payload was finalised and a review report was sent to the ISRO Satellite Centre in Bangalore. Since June 2011, the team has been finalising components required. By November 2011, the various constraints of each sub-system will be taken into account and a preliminary design of the satellite would be prepared.
After procurement of various components followed by a detailed analysis of each item, the team will begin assembling the satellite.
Testing of each component will be conducted from December 2011 to May 2012 to check for space worthiness. In June-July 2012, the satellite will be subjected to thermal, vacuum, radiation and vibrational and other tests to check its robustness.

Youth flying High after Cotswold Airport Aviation Scholarships Graduation
Young people participating in the program Cotswold Aviation Airport Fellowship completed with flying colors.
Ten budding aviators were selected from more than 80 applications from young people across Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
The programme now in its fifth year and is aimed at young people aged 14-18 years. Funded by the airport managing director and owner Ronan Harvey is held in conjunction with the airport on fly2help charity and local business aviation.
The scholarships give students a taste of flying and aeronautical engineering with visits to aviation businesses and talks from professionals from pilots to engineers.
Airport director Suzannah Harvey said: "To give young people the opportunity to take their first steps on a career path in aviation is very rewarding indeed and everyone involved with the scholarships is absolutely delighted the students appear to have taken so much away from their experience.”
Planning for next year's scholarship scheme has started and applications will be taken from October 1. The programme is scheduled to run at Easter 2012.

Air India Executive Director(CEO) should be Committed to the Long Haul !
Air india need a CEO committed to a long haul !
Finally, 56 years old Arvind Jadhav, CMD of National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL), which succeeded in a short span of two years, bowed to bring India's leading airline to the brink of bankruptcy has bowed out !
No doubt he had an impressive record of educational accomplishments and years of experience in handling diverse subjects being Commissioner, Karnataka Housing Board; Secretary, Energy Department; Managing Director, Mysore Minerals Limited, Commissioner, Commerce and Industries Department, and last but not the least as Principal Secretary, Infrastructure Development Department, of Government of Karnataka.
He also had a tenure at the Central Government, where as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power he was reportedly responsible for ushering in some reforms in the power sector. He had also served as Chief Vigilance Officer, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), but alas he had no clue of how to run a major Airline !
Perhaps his one significant contribution to NACIL has been to get it renamed as Air India on 26th. October 2010, an airline which for decades had carried the national flag and is still a brand name well recognized around the World.
His very first brush with employees and that too with the all powerful Pilots of Air India who struck work last year demanding higher wages proved to be his undoing as instead of finding a common ground he chose to employ strong arm tactics and walked rough shod all over them !
Fortunately for him having been already empaneled for a post of Secretary to the Government of India he will have a slot awaiting him on exiting the Airline, but the big mess he leaves behind will take his successor a herculean effort to clean up.
The all powerful IAS (Indian Administrative Service) fraternity to which he belongs, in view of mounting criticism could no longer support him nor find a volunteer from amongst their ranks to take up the captaincy of the sinking ship !
However some one had to take charge while the hunt is on for a permanent ‘numero uno’ to head Air India. Some one readily available to try his luck was Rohit Nandan, the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation which oversees Air India’s activities.
However, perhaps it is high time that professionals were brought in and may be the likes of Tata once again persuaded to take over the nation’s premier airline. Infusion of fresh funds by the government into the ailing company would perhaps not be a futile exercise then !
A major airline such as Air India with its 5 subsidiaries viz. Air India Express, Cargo, Charters Services, Air Transport Services, and Regional Services (formerly Alliance Air) involves supervision and coordination of varied activities such as maintenance and operation of expensive air crafts, marketing, publicity, and handling people viz. Pilots with mile high ego and back end office staff, not to forget ticket paying passenger who are now very demanding in regards to the quality of service they get.
The monopoly of government business cannot keep Air India afloat even for a day, and what with no less than half a dozen private airlines who have entered the skies over the last one decade and are now feverishly competing to fill thousands of seats they have to offer, it is survival of the fittest .
A competent and capable manager with years of running a major Airline under his belt, the best what the market can offer has to be quickly found and adhoc arrangement with civil servants as CEO discontinued at the earliest.
Since 27th. Feb. 2011 all flights of Air India carries the new mapped AI flight number, and since then nearly 100 national and international flights are flying under the ‘AI’ code, consigning the ‘IC’ code to history. It is almost like being reborn and perhaps this will be the last opportunity for the ‘Maharaja’ to effect a turnaround. Its over 31,000 employees also deserve a better deal in the form of a CEO with a long term commitment.
With connections to 93 destinations (60 domestic and 33 international) in 24 countries, it is still a force to be reckoned with. The new CEO will have to possess a vision and zeal to get various divisive forces from protecting their respective turfs and instead work towards a common objective.
Undoubtedly it will be a herculean task for him from being sidetracked while focusing on the bolts and nuts of things, and carry a sustained campaign on a company’s image makeover when industry analysts, competitors and customers are falling over each other saying what needs to be done !

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Boeing received U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification on August 19 for the new 747-8 Freighter, passing two of the final landmarks on the airplane s journey to entry into service.
The FAA granted Boeing an Amended Type Certificate (ATC) and an Amended Production Certificate for the 747-8 Freighter, while the EASA also granted the company an ATC for the airplane.
With these certificates, the program is in the final stages of preparing to deliver the first 747-8 Freighter to launch customer Cargolux in early September.
The Amended Type Certificate acknowledges that the FAA and EASA have certified that the design of the 747-8 Freighter is compliant with all aviation regulatory requirements and will produce a safe and reliable airplane.
The airplane logged more than 3,400 hours of flight testing and many thousands more of ground, part, component, materials and other testing on the road to certification.
The Amended Production Certificate shows the FAA has validated that the Boeing 747 production system can reliably produce airplanes that will conform to the airplane s design.
EASA accepts FAA oversight of Boeing production certificates as sufficient for its regulations, as FAA accepts EASA oversight of European manufacturers production certificates.
The 747-8 Freighter is the new high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance.
It is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet and 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 Freighter.
The stretch provides customers with 16 percent more revenue cargo volume compared to its predecessor.
That translates to four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets.
The 747-8 Freighters will be powered with GE's GEnx-2B engines.

San Jose, California — The National Gay Pilots Association Education Fund (NGPA-EF) awarded $22,000 in scholarships today to five students pursing careers as professional pilots. Since its inception in 1996, NGPA-EF has awarded$139,000 in scholarships to 46 students. This year, four scholarships are in the amount of $3,750 each; plus, for the first time, the NGPA Education Fund awarded an endowed scholarship of $7,000 to one student.
NGPA-EF Board Chairman, Captain Tom Little explained, "this endowed scholarship is named in memory of David M. Charlebois, an NGPA member who lost his life while serving as First Officer on American Airlines Flight #77 which was hijacked by Al-Qaeda and crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001."
The National Gay Pilots Association created the Education Fund in 1996 to encourage members of the LGBT community to pursue careers as pilots. Through general fundraising appeals, and by soliciting gifts, the NGPA Education Fund intends to provide as much immediate capital to the LGBT aviation community as possible, while preserving and building an endowment for the future.

Flying Scholarship for Kids 12-17 who are Interested in Aviation: Young Eagles
EAA Young Eagles - Annual Scholarship contest for kids 12-17
The EAA Young Eagles offers kids a chance to fly for free and has flown more than 1.3 million youths in 90 countries since its creation in 1992.
The next local Young Eagles flying day is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Harbor Springs airport. All kids 8-17 are invited to come to the airport for a free flight around the bay, over the school or to see their house from the sky. Volunteer pilots will bring their own three or four passenger airplanes and provide fuel to give kids the chance to fly.
"Our goal for this program is to introduce kids to aviation and view the countryside from 1,000 feet up," said Bill Meyer, coordinator of the EAA Young Eagles chapter 1087.
The club has an annual scholarship contest for kids 12-17 who are interested in aviation. The best essay wins a trip to the air academy summer camp for aviation in Oshkosh, Wis. This year, the club was able to provide two scholarships to area youths.
The scholarship program is funded by the flying days. For each Young Eagle that flies for the first time, the chapter receives $5 from Philips Petroleum and Ford Motor Company to be used for scholarships.
The Young Eagles have a flying day about once a month. So far this year 225 children and about 65 parents have flown, according to Meyer. The events are first come, first served. Large groups such as schools and Boy Scout troops can preregister for group flying days, but the normally scheduled flying days are free and open to anyone who shows up.
"It's all about getting kids interested in aviation," Meyer explained.
The international women in aviation week is coming up next spring, commented Meyer, who said he remembers flying a girl who is now a helicopter pilot for the Coast Guard. Many, many pilots have been Young Eagles, he said.

Attending U.S. Space Camp and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and any attempt by an aspiring astronaut will be an impressive experience for a life time.
So far, 35 children have had the opportunity to attend the U.S. -Space and Rocket Center.
At Space Camp, participants are able to choose from three different tracks – space, aviation or robotics. The camp offers “in-depth, hands-on experiences for people to learn to train like an astronaut,” said Jennifer Jones, of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center.
The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and other space camps seek to encourage kids to be engaged in the fields of math, science, technology and engineering.
“The programs and experiences offered at U.S. Space Camp help to provide youths with the same level of inspiration that we felt when watching the boundaries being pushed outward by the Apollo program,” the Higginses said by e-mail. “Our goal is to try to ensure that deserving youths with a passion for space science and exploration are afforded the same opportunity that Alex had for a potentially life-changing experience of a week at space camp.”

SEATTLE--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Aviation High School will break ground on its new campus on the grounds of The Museum of Flight on Tuesday, Aug. 23 complete with student alumni flying five or more planes to the site, and a student-built robot assisting with the first shovel of dirt.
The student-flown planes will land at Boeing Field, immediately in front of The Museum of Flight at approximately 10:30 a.m. The students will proceed across the street to the groundbreaking celebration, to be held at 11:00 a.m. at the future high school site, just north of The Museum of Flight’s airpark on East Marginal Way. Students from Aviation High School’s robotics team will operate the robot. To end the program, students will launch a model rocket they built to signify the official “launch” of the new Aviation High School.
Aviation High School, part of Highline Public Schools but open to students across the region, has been in temporary locations since it opened in 2004. The new facility is being built in collaboration with The Museum of Flight. In addition, Aviation High School was the first college preparatory aviation-themed high school in the nation and is dedicated to becoming the premier school of choice for science, technology, engineering and math learning in the region. The new school is expected to open in 2013.

Helicopter Foundation International (HFI) is pleased to announce the 2012 Bill Sanderson Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Scholarship Award Program. This program was founded by Helicopters Association International’s (HAI) Technical Committee to promote the choice of helicopter maintenance as a career.
Applicants should be about to graduate from an FAA approved Part 147 AMT School, or a recent recipient (within the last two years) of an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate. All FAA written and practical exams must be successfully completed prior to attending the chosen school (not necessarily prior to applying for the scholarship). International applicants should have their respective country’s FAA equivalent tests completed.
Each of the winners will have a choice of one of the following courses made available by the helicopter airframe and engine manufacturers. Applicants should list courses in order of preference, as courses will be awarded by preference, in order of award placement.

Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. (any model)
Eurocopter (all current models, except Super Puma series)
MD Helicopters (500/600/900 series)

Indonesian Airlines Sky Aviation today announced the purchase of 12 new aircraft from Russia in an effort to combat the major airlines on routes that are currently non-competitive.
100-seat aircraft, the category of regional research, has a cruising altitude of 40,000 feet and a maximum speed below the speed of sound, which makes it a potential competitor to the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
This year, Sky Aviation is carrying 1100 pilgrims from Riau in the aviation sector hajj landing points.The country dominated by state-controlled flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, but the range of smaller airlines focused their energy on serving large parts of the archipelago. Many domestic airlines have demonstrated non-uniform level of safety, however.
