iPhone users to Fly unmanned Aircraft

Smart phones fly mini drones

An iPhone doesn’t look all that threatening at first glance. But connect it to a military drone, and all of a sudden that could be one dangerous little smartphone.

Researchers from Boeing and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an app that allows iPhone users to fly unmanned aircraft using fairly simple finger movements. According to the group’s website, the technology could soon be used to allow military officials to remotely control UAVs in combat and intelligence-gathering missions.

Smartphones have been used to fly drones before, but never from such remote distances. In the video demonstration below, Boeing engineer George Windsor sends the unmanned contraption buzzing around the MIT baseball field in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Windsor, meanwhile, is sitting in a Boeing building in Seattle, Washington—some 3,000 miles away.

Aeronautical Engineers make Films

Engineers make Films - The Invisible Fish

A bunch of engineers, who have passed out of the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, have a hobby that has nothing to do with aeronautics. They make films. In fact, the alumni has made 30 films in the last five years. Pondfreaks Entertainment, as the group calls itself, has directors, actors, a screenplay writer, editors and a graphic designer. Lately, the group has been making waves on the Internet with its 20-minute short film The Invisible Fish.

Some kids who loved films started the club. Their first film was a 20-minute thriller called Highway, which was terrible. Karthik, one of the team members, says candidly, “We got very bad comments from friends and anyone who saw it. The quality of the video camera was really bad, the editing was not well done and it was miscast.” But a film or two later, they made one more thriller Alive. It went on to win awards at a college film festival and since then, there has been no looking back. They experimented with themes of horror, friendship, love, Naxalism, gang feuds, cops, illusion and many more. They’ve shot in Goa, Coastal India, Hyderabad and even their homes.

While the learning process was gradual, books and watching films helped the most. They watched the top 250 movies of the IMBD list. Ajay, the member who handles visual effects and graphics on the team, says, “Thankfully, our faculty and parents were very supportive and encouraging. They gifted us books which became a tool of learning.”

New Zealand Aircraft Engineer License (AMEL) is Recognised in Australia

New Zealand LAMEs - Getting Your Licence Recognised in Australia

Australia and New Zealand have agreed to recognise each other's Aviation Maintenance Engineer Licences (AMEL) under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMRA).

Under the TTMRA, Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) requires an Australian AMEL to be issued. Before that can occur, New Zealand AME holders are required to satisfy all requirements for registration. That includes passing the Australian Airworthiness Administration (AA) examination.

Due to differences between the New Zealand and Australian AME licence rating groups and privileges, certain New Zealand AME ratings may be limited when translated into Australian ratings and different from the group rating normally issued.

Information for New Zealand LAMEs planning to work in Australia can be found on the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) web site or by contacting CASA's Maintenance Personnel Standards Section. We suggest you look at the web site first.

What is the Best Beginner RC Helicopter?

Most loaded RC Helicopter question of all time

Factors to be considered before buying RC Helicopter:

How much is your budget for your first rc helicopter?
How much  is in your budget for future rc helicopters?
How good your hand / eye coordination?
How old are you? (Although they are people who are 50 + learning remote control helicopters, under normal circumstances, the younger you are you can learn faster and better eyesight and hand / eye coordination)
How good your vision?

Some above factors are more important than other areas, such as budget, and available flying area

They are three kind of Beginner RC Helicopters to choose:
4 Channel Coaxial(Coax) -> 4 channel Fixed Pitch(FP) -> 6 Channel Collective Pitch(CP)

The left is generally the cheapest type to buy, and on the right is the most expensive type to buy. In recent years (even months). Between the coaxial cable and the FP sector stability has become smaller. FP helis like Walkera CB180 and Xheli of Madhawk300 line shows the stability of the charactoristics comparable Coaxials.
Do you have a large indoor area to fly it?
Do you have local resources, may be able to help you? (Friends, flying club, the local hobby shop [and know what they're doing])
Availability of rc helicopter parts in your locale?
Former RC aircraft experience?

Helicopters stability are subject to influences in the wind. Here is a breakdown of how they are used:
  1. Coaxial (indoor only or zero conditions Wind)
  2. Fixed-pitch (room, garage, carport, wind-protected back yard is usually <5mph winds)
  3. Collective pitch (in the open air, large backyard, basketball court, open parking, etc. Usually, <10mph winds *)

Aircraft engineer sucked into plane engine !

Colleagues found the Aircraft Engineer, dead when they arrived for work on Monday morning.
They called emergency services, who battled unsuccessfully to revive him.

One source said the engineer had entered a testing enclosure while the engine was running.

The man's employers, Safe Air, an engineering subsidiary of the national carrier Air New Zealand, said he died while carrying out routine maintenance.

Safe Air does maintenance and repair work on civilian planes and on military aircraft for the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Rob Fyfe, chief executive of Air New Zealand, flew to the scene after being briefed about the disaster.

Inspector Steve Caldwell, area commander of the Marlborough police district, said: "Police are investigating this death on behalf of the coroner, who will determine the cause of the death in due course."
