Aircraft Maintenance is the most important department within an airline. Maintenance makes the final decision as to whether an aircraft is ready for flight, a decision governed by the principle of “Safety First”. As such, maintenance is involved in almost all aspects of the airline, from where we fly, to how often we fly and when we fly.

Aircraft Maintenance Technician - Technicians are responsible for scheduled maintenance, defect rectification, and troubleshooting Company and customer aircraft. Working in the hangar and on the ramp, technicians are involved in repairing such things as flight control systems, landing gear, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, etc. Candidates hired as Aircraft Technicians require a college certificate (in Aviation). In order to be eligible for promotion above the level of a Technician, a suitably rated Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) ‘M” license is required and can be sought after relevant years of documented work experience.

Aircraft Engine Overhaul Mechanic - Mechanics maintain aircraft engines, including dismantling, inspecting, repair, assembling and testing. Preference is given to candidates who are a Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council (CAMC) registered Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Repair and Overhaul Technician.

Aircraft Sheet Metal & Plumbing Technicians - Technician assessing damage and corrosion of aircraft structures; repairing, replacing and modifying sheet metal or composite structures Candidates hired as Structural Technicians require a college certificate (in Aviation) or equivalent schooling from a approved school. In order to be eligible for promotion above the level of a Technician, a suitably rated Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) licence is required and can be sought after documented work experience.

Aircraft Wheel and Brake Unit Maintenance - Technicians maintain the aircraft wheels, brakes and tires. Other components such as life preservers, rubber rafts and oxygen masks are also maintained by this unit.

(a) An applicant for an PART-66 /JAR-66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence shall have acquired:

1. for PART-66 category A and subcategories B1.2 and B1.4:

    three years of practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft, if the applicant has no previous relevant technical training; or
    two years of practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft and completion of training considered relevant by the competent authority as a skilled worker, in a technical trade; or
    one year of practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft and completion of a Part-147 approved basic training course.

2. for PART-66 category B2 and subcategories B1.1 and B1.3:
    five years of practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft if the applicant has no previous relevant technical training; or
    three years of practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft and completion of training considered relevant by the competent authority as a skilled worker, in a technical trade; or
    two years of practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft and completion of a Part -147 approved basic training course.

3. for PART-66 category C with respect to large aircraft:

    three years of experience exercising category B1.1, B1.3 or B2 privileges on large aircraft or as Part-145 B1.1, B1.3 or B2 support staff, or, a combination of both; or
    five years of experience exercising category B1.2 or B1.4 privileges on large aircraft or as Part-145 B1.2 or B1.4 support staff, or a combination of both; or

        4. for category C with respect to non large aircraft:

three years of experience exercising category B1 or B.2 privileges on non large aircraft or as Part-145 B1 or B.2 support staff, or a combination of both; or

        5. for category C obtained through the academic route:

an applicant holding an academic degree in a technical discipline, from a university or other higher educational institution recognized by the competent authority, three years of experience working in a civil aircraft maintenance environment on a representative selection of tasks directly associated with aircraft maintenance including six months of observation of base maintenance tasks.

(b)    An applicant for an extension to an PART-66 /JAR-66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence shall have a minimum civil aircraft maintenance experience requirement appropriate to the additional category or subcategory of Licence applied for as defined in Appendix IV to this Part.

(c)    For category A, B1 and B2 the experience must be practical which means being involved with a representative cross section of maintenance tasks on aircraft.

(d)    For all applicants, at least one year of the required experience must be recent maintenance experience on aircraft of the category/subcategory for which the initial PART-66 /JAR-66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence is sought. For subsequent category/subcategory additions to an existing PART-66 /JAR-66 Aircraft Maintenance License, the additional recent maintenance experience required may be less than one year, but must be at least three months. The required experience must be dependent upon the difference between the Licence category/subcategory held and applied for. Such additional experience must be typical of the new Licence category/subcategory sought.

(e)    Notwithstanding paragraph (a), aircraft maintenance experience gained outside a civil aircraft maintenance environment shall be accepted when such maintenance is equivalent to that required by this Part as established by the competent authority. Additional experience of civil aircraft maintenance shall, however, be required to ensure understanding of the civil aircraft maintenance environment.

How to become a LAME in Australia

Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in Australia 
You must be at least 21 years of age, have at least 4 years experience in maintenance of aircraft or aircraft component maintenance. You must also have at least 2 years experience in the use of class license. One is classified as a body (AF), engine (English) or electrical, instrument and radio (EI & R).

The best place to gain experience through employment with the airline, defense, or general aviation.
You should also know how to read, write and understand English language, English is recognized worldwide as the standard language of aviation, there is no disability that may affect your ability to perform his duties.

You must complete a CASA endorsed training course on the aircraft type that the licence is for. (eg. Boeing 747, Cessna 120, and Bell 47). This is commonly known as aircraft type training.

Prior to completion of training aircraft type you should have all the basic requirements of knowledge for the license rating. Basic knowledge related to things such as aircraft systems, structures and theory of flight.
Basic knowledge is proved by either passing all of the appropriate CASA core and specific group examinations (known as the Basic), or completion of formal training in a recognized institution (according to CASA AME licensing section).
You must also have completed the Basic Airworthiness Authority examination (AA) within 24 months of the license is issued.

You must demonstrate practical experience to the CASA aircraft type that the license is requested on. This practical experience may be in the form of "Schedule Experience" (SOE), which is a log of tasks performed on aircraft and signed by LAME, which are certified for the task, or at the end of Log Industrial Experience and achievement in other work that is related to the rating sought .

Once these conditions have been met you can apply for CASA, CASA, and if CASA are satisfied with your knowledge and experience they should issue you with an AME Licence.
