Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship

Conklin & de Decker, in coordination with NBAA, established the Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship in 2007 to benefit undergraduates pursuing careers in business aviation management.

The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Al Conklin, a U.S. Air Force veteran and business aviation leader for more than 60 years. Conklin’s experience as a business aircraft salesman in the early decades of his career informed his later work in proving the economic value of aircraft to business. With Bill de Decker, he first published the Aircraft Cost Evaluator in the 1970s and later founded Conklin & de Decker, an aviation information company that provides aircraft operating cost and performance data.

NBAA and Conklin & de Decker annually award $5,000 to an undergraduate student who is officially enrolled in an aviation management program at a University Aviation Association (UAA) member school. Scholarships will be awarded for the 2012–2013 academic year, and checks will be made payable to the school. Awards will be made to U.S. citizens or permanent residents without regard to sex, race, religion or national origin. Scholarship recipients must use the funds by October 31, 2013, or risk forfeit of the award. See application form for details.

Completed and signed applications and required documents must be postmarked no later than July 31, 2012, to be considered for the scholarship.

For all NBAA scholarships, applicants are limited to receiving one award per person, per year. Direct all questions about this application to NBAA at (202) 783-9250 or

Swiss-made The World's Largest Solar-Powered Plane

Solar plane to make first cross-continent flight

The world's largest solar-powered plane, Swiss-made Solar Impulse, will take its first-ever cross-continent flight in May or June.

The plane, co-piloted by Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, will attempt to fly more than 2,500 km for the first time, taking off in Payerne in western Switzerland, crossing the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean without using fuel, and landing in Morocco.

The exact date for taking off will be decided according to weather condition, said Andre Borschberg, co-founder and CEO of Solar Impulse that made the aircraft.

Bertrand Piccard and Borschberg will take turns to fly the aircraft on its 48-hour journey, with a scheduled stopover near Madrid to change pilots, Xinhua reported.

This long-duration flight will serve as a dress rehearsal for the round-the-world flight in 2014, and will allow the team to gather experience in cooperating with international airports, integrating the prototype into regular air traffic patterns, and managing the logistics of maintenance, said Borschberg.

Solar Impulse, the first aircraft that can fly day and night without fuel or polluting emissions, has a wingspan of 63.4 meters, as wide as an Airbus A340, and weighs only 1,600 kg. It has 12,000 solar cells mounted on the wings, which provide momentum for its four electric motors.

The plane took its first international flight from Switzerland to Brussels May 13, 2011, and marked its second international flight to Paris in June last year.

Jet Engines are Mounted Upside Down, What happens?

Posted by AME on Monday , under , | comments (1)

Blown Lift Jet

What happens when you mount jet engines upside down on a specially designed wing? You get better lift and a quieter aircraft, according to engineers at NASA who designed AMELIA (Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics).

The advantage of that enhanced lift? You can use a runway that's 25% the size of a runway you'd need for conventional aircraft. And because those engines are on the top side of the wing, the wing itself prevents a sizable portion of the planes noise from reaching the ground. Beyond those advantages, this design can make wings smaller, creating less drag and better fuel efficiency.

As for the preliminary results, they look much as predicted. Blowing substantially increases lift. With trailing-edge blowing alone, that extra lift falls off as angle of attack increases because flow begins to separate from the leading edge. With leading- and trailing-edge blowing, lift increases with angle of attack because the flow stays attached. Adding the engines increases lift at high angle of attack, but their height makes only a small difference to performance.

This is not some pie-in-the-sky concept, either -- NASA already has flying prototypes using this technology, so you can expect this to be implemented in commonplace aircraft fairly soon.

Boeing SUGAR Freeze Plane

Here's another NASA aircraft project, this one using frozen liquid natural gas as its fuel. Called SUGAR (Subsonic Ultra Green Aircraft Research) Freeze, this 154-seat plane aims to solve that problem of jet aircraft gobbling fuel like there's no tomorrow.

Why natural gas? Because there's so much of it -- particularly in the United States -- and it creates less pollution. In addition, this design requires 64% less fuel than a typical 737 you might be flying today.
