Careers in Aerospace Engineering /Aeronautical Engineering field are exploding with opportunities, but the degree is not cheap, and sooner or later you have to pay. Here are some tips to get that precious degree in hand, not a heavy burden.

Aviation Grants

The Pell Grant is the #1 grant for undergraduates. It's government funding scholarships to students studying in any field, including engineering. You can receive up to $5,550. To apply you must fill out a free FAFSA application at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
Aerospace Scholarships

One of the most popular scholarship programs for math and science majors is the Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship funded by the Department of Defense. This scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate students. It includes full tuition payments, cash awards, paid internships, and more. Find out more about it at http://smart.asee.org/.

Another scholarship program is the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). They secure 30 scholarships for undergraduate students and 13 for graduate students. To find out more visit http://www.aiaa.org/.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program is an undergraduate math, science, and engineering scholarship. It is a renewable $7,500 award and can be applied for every year. To apply visit http://www.act.org/goldwater/.
Aeronautical Fellowships

The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program is a resource for master's degree and doctoral degree seeking students. They offer a $30,000 annual stipend and $10,500 allowance to be spent on educational expenses. To find out more go to http://www.nsfgrfp.org/.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also provides fellowships. The awards vary depending on if you are an undergraduate or a graduate student. Both offer a paid summer internship at a NASA research center. Check out http://nasa.asee.org/ to learn more.

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship is specifically for doctoral students. It is funded by the Department of Defense. It covers tuition, a monthly stipend, and health insurance. To research more about this fellowship go to http://ndseg.asee.org/.
Other Sources of Funding

The Federal Work Study (FWS) Program is offered to students in all fields of study. In this program, you work a job, usually on campus, and are awarded money for education costs. A FAFSA form must be filled out to apply.

There is also the Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), which is specifically for science and engineering students. A student participates in research in a Navy laboratory for 10 weeks and receives a stipend, which differs depending on if you are an undergraduate or a graduate student. You can find out more about the internship at http://nreip.asee.org/.

Many organizations offer engineering competitions for cash prizes. The American Institute of Aeronautics (AIAA) for instance, offers a design competition where you can win up to $2,500. To read more about this competition go to http://www.aiaa.org/.
