A aero students of Manipal Institute of Technology (AeroMIT) made India proud after it received good reviews from engineers of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), for their innovative unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the international student design competition held in Georgia, USA.
"Our design 'AeroMIT' received critical appreciation from NASA's next-generation transport engineers for its systems engineering report. We were one among the top five teams," said Ibrahim Khaleel, a third-year aeronautical student who was part of the AeroMIT-UAV project.
Overall, 75 teams from across the globe took part in the competition. The team from Manipal secured the 13th place in oral presentation and 15th in design. Overall, they came in 29th and received a certificate of completion from the NASA.
The team was successful in turning a mere concept into reality at the AeroDesign competition, which was celebrating its silver jubilee this year. The competition features three classes: Regular, Micro and Advanced. The team entered the Regular, where the objective was to carry maximum payload.
The AeroMIT team started on a high note with successful test flights at Cobb County Radio Control Modeler's Club at Marietta. The plane was evaluated by judges from NASA and aircraft manufacturers, Lockheed Martin, Gulfstream, and Dassault Systems.
The project was sponsored by Aditya Birla Group and Anu Projects Consultants and Engineers. They sponsored Rs2.5 lakh and Rs1 lakh, respectively.
The team comprised group leader Parth Khare, Shekhar Jha, Samdarshi, Karan Bhise, Ibrahim Kaleel, Kumar Mrityunjay, Katayan Sinha, and Arun Kumar.
Students Sheikh Adil Anwar, Pratik Mukherjee, and Akash Budhia looked into the management aspect.
Faculty Advisors: Dr Ramamohan Pai and Manikandan M, department of aeronautical and automobile.
The team is working towards participating in SAE AeroDesign West 2012, which will be held in California from March 16 to 18.
