British Airways Engineering Apprenticeship
Engineering Technical Apprenticeship
Qualities, Training, Eligibility and Selection

Qualities
The Engineering department prides itself on its adherence to local, departmental and regulatory procedures. Aligned to this we require individuals with a high level of analytical ability, an enquiring mind, a willingness to take the initiative and a proactive approach to responsibilities as well as the ability to work as part of a team. Alongside this we require individuals that are competent at working with their hands and have an eye for detail.

Training and Career Development
The Engineering teams that maintain and overhaul our fleet of aircraft are predominantly centred at Heathrow but we have further bases at Gatwick, Glasgow, South Wales and at a number of line stations around the world. We have approximately 3200 staff in the production arena

We've designed this apprenticeship with one thing in mind: you. It's structured so that you work with a broad cross-section of our Engineering production teams and gain a true understanding of what we all do and how we do it, from fitting a new filament (light bulb) to repairing a water and waste system (toilet) to changing and testing a £15m powerplant (engine), to deliver a truly world class service to our operation. That way, once you've completed all of your placements, you'll be more informed and will be directly involved in the decision as to where your final placement, and as such the start of the next step on your career ladder, will be.

The placements will cover time in the following areas;
 Aircraft Maintenance
    London’s engineering team of 2200 highly skilled engineers maintains the Heathrow and Gatwick-based BA fleet across 30 hangar bays between Terminal 5 and the BA Engineering East Base. Focused on delivery, safety and reliability, they undertake all aspects of on-wing aircraft maintenance, including:

    ▪ Ramp maintenance at Terminal 5
    ▪ Larger defect rectification and structural repairs at our rapid response casualty unit
    ▪ Routine minor and major maintenance at our base hangars
    Component Overhaul    Situated across two sites, one in Hayes, and the other at Heathrow, British Airways component engineering (BACE) provides competitive mechanical/composite component overhaul, repair and testing. In addition, BACE provides a specialist on wing repair service to minimise total product costs and maximise aircraft availability.
