Spain's First Unmanned Solar Plane

Students of Terrassa School of Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering (ETSEIAT) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya BarcelonaTech (UPC) have together designed Spain's first unmanned solar plane – the Solar Endeavour UPC, using a technology developed by them. 
 

The students, Joaquim Creus Prats, Josep Fernández Coll, Carles Felip Aragón, Marta Marimon Mateu, Arnau Pons Lorente, IgnacioPedrosa Lojo, and Xavier Serena Alòs formed the ETSEIAT Trencalòs team.

Solar cells are fixed on to the wings and tail of solar planes. The cells had to be adapted to fit onto the wing’s curved, aerodynamic surface. The monocrystalline silicon used for making solar cells is extremely fragile and tends to break. The cells are normally 0.2 mm thick and the Spanish team built a panel, which along with the protective coating had a total thickness less than 1 mm.

CATUAV provided remote control and telemetry systems, which included GPS navigation, flight-assistance instrumentation and a video camera that provided real-time data to the control station on the ground.

The Solar Endeavour UPC has a cruising speed of 58 km/h with a speed of 90 km/h. It weighs 11.3 kg and has a length of 1.8 m and a wingspan of 5 m. The plane has five batteries that have a capacity of 40 Ah and weigh 2.5 kg. The average motor consumption is 11 A. The motor has a maximum power of 500 W and a cruising motor power of 127 W.

The solar plane flew continuously for 5 h 48 min at the Sedis aero club located in Seu d'Urgell. The solar panels provide over 50% of the power required during peak sunlight hours, while the batteries can supply the power when there is no sunlight source.

• Solar planes enhance the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

• They can fly over the desired areas for days together. 

• They can be used for scientific missions, communications in isolated areas, traffic control and prevention of forest fires. 

The ETSEIAT Trencalòs project demonstrates the potential of solar planes for civilian applications.

Embry-Riddle is strong in Astronautical/Aerospace Engineering Domain

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University retained its rank as the best aerospace engineering program in the nation for the 12th straight year while Stetson University in DeLand remained one of the South's top regional universities, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Daytona Beach campus placed No. 1 in the category of "Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical" for engineering schools with bachelor and master's degrees.

Embry-Riddle's main Daytona Beach campus continued leading the way in the nation for best undergraduate engineering programs in the category of "aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical" for schools with bachelor or master degrees. The campus in Prescott, Ariz., ranked third -- similar to last year.

Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach campus tied for 11th for "Best in Undergraduate Engineering," similar to last year. The Prescott campus tied for 16th.

You must be at least 21 years of age, have at least 4 years experience in maintenance of aircraft or aircraft component maintenance. You must also have at least 2 years experience in the use of class license. One is classified as a body (AF), engine (English) or electrical, instrument and radio (EI & R).

The best place to gain experience through employment with the airline, defense, or general aviation.
You should also know how to read, write and understand English language, English is recognized worldwide as the standard language of aviation, there is no disability that may affect your ability to perform his duties.

You must complete a CASA endorsed training course on the aircraft type that the licence is for. (eg. Boeing 747, Cessna 120, and Bell 47). This is commonly known as aircraft type training.

Prior to completion of training aircraft type you should have all the basic requirements of knowledge for the license rating. Basic knowledge related to things such as aircraft systems, structures and theory of flight.
Basic knowledge is proved by either passing all of the appropriate CASA core and specific group examinations (known as the Basic), or completion of formal training in a recognized institution (according to CASA AME licensing section).
You must also have completed the Basic Airworthiness Authority examination (AA) within 24 months of the license is issued.

You must demonstrate practical experience to the CASA aircraft type that the license is requested on. This practical experience may be in the form of "Schedule Experience" (SOE), which is a log of tasks performed on aircraft and signed by LAME, which are certified for the task, or at the end of Log Industrial Experience and achievement in other work that is related to the rating sought .

Once these conditions have been met you can apply for CASA, CASA, and if CASA are satisfied with your knowledge and experience they should issue you with an AME Licence.

Aviation HS to Break Ground on New Campus at Museum of Flight; Student Alumni to Fly In One-of-a-Kind School Celebrates Beginning of New Era; Fundraising Goal Reached

SEATTLE--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Aviation High School will break ground on its new campus on the grounds of The Museum of Flight on Tuesday, Aug. 23 complete with student alumni flying five or more planes to the site, and a student-built robot assisting with the first shovel of dirt.

The student-flown planes will land at Boeing Field, immediately in front of The Museum of Flight at approximately 10:30 a.m. The students will proceed across the street to the groundbreaking celebration, to be held at 11:00 a.m. at the future high school site, just north of The Museum of Flight’s airpark on East Marginal Way. Students from Aviation High School’s robotics team will operate the robot. To end the program, students will launch a model rocket they built to signify the official “launch” of the new Aviation High School.

Aviation High School, part of Highline Public Schools but open to students across the region, has been in temporary locations since it opened in 2004. The new facility is being built in collaboration with The Museum of Flight. In addition, Aviation High School was the first college preparatory aviation-themed high school in the nation and is dedicated to becoming the premier school of choice for science, technology, engineering and math learning in the region. The new school is expected to open in 2013.

Bill Sanderson Aviation Maintenance Technician Scholarship

Helicopter Foundation International (HFI) is pleased to announce the 2012 Bill Sanderson Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Scholarship Award Program. This program was founded by Helicopters Association International’s (HAI) Technical Committee to promote the choice of helicopter maintenance as a career.

Applicants should be about to graduate from an FAA approved Part 147 AMT School, or a recent recipient (within the last two years) of an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate.  All FAA written and practical exams must be successfully completed prior to attending the chosen school (not necessarily prior to applying for the scholarship).  International applicants should have their respective country’s FAA equivalent tests completed.

Each of the winners will have a choice of one of the following courses made available by the helicopter airframe and engine manufacturers. Applicants should list courses in order of preference, as courses will be awarded by preference, in order of award placement.

05. Associate of Applied Science ( Professional Pilot Degree) by USFA, USA after 4 years of study in India and USA.
This 4-year B.Tech.(Aviation Engineering) and other degrees are recognized globally through USFA, a US Government recognized Flight Academy of International Standards serving since 23 years and JNTUK, Kakinada, an AICTE and UGC recognized and funded Government University, established as an Institution in 1946.  (2) Applications for admission will be processed jointly by JNTUK and USFA .(3) There will be no provision for students to discontinue the studies in the middle of the program and claim alternative degree.  (4) Admissions are all purely provisional and the University reserves the right to cancel the admission at any stage.

OTHER FEATURES:
(1) USFA has 14 Aircrafts available for world-class training (Single engine, Multi-engine, Turbine engine, Aerobatic flights). (2) Student can convert his/her study Visa to Working Visa within these two years of stay at Texas. (3) Job assurance for top 10 students out of 16 students trained by USFA. (4) The training required for Conversion of FAA licence to DGCA licence, will be facilitated by USFA and JNTUK both. (5) As all licences and Certificates issued by USFA are recognized by  FFA, the student has credibility and eligibility for jobs all over the world.

Commencement of Class work at JNTUK, Kakinada  :  11 July 2011 (Monday)
